I made this image when I was home for a week and hoping to find some still life elements. I asked my neighbor if I could have anything his cat, Sandy, might catch. He came over later the same day with this blackbird. The idea behind the series came from Anna Fox’s Gifts from the Cat series and Andrew Bruce’s Tender series, which I saw in one of his lectures. At first, I wanted to save memories of my own cat’s gifts, but then I started to find other dead animals and I didn’t want them to be forgotten either. I do not want these images of death to be unpleasant, so I aim to make images that are a beautiful preservation of the animal.
